What exactly is hospice care?
Hospice care is a specialized form of medical and emotional support designed for people who are nearing the end of life due to a terminal illness. Rather than focusing on curing the illness, hospice shifts the goal to comfort, dignity, and quality of life ā for both the patient and their family.
Our team of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers works together to manage pain and symptoms, provide emotional and spiritual care, and support the entire family through one of life's most meaningful transitions.
Is choosing hospice the same as giving up?
Not at all. Choosing hospice is not giving up ā it is choosing differently. It means shifting focus from fighting the illness to living as fully and comfortably as possible in the time that remains.
In fact, research consistently shows that people who enter hospice care early often live longer and report higher quality of life than those who continue aggressive treatment. Many families tell us they wish they had chosen hospice sooner.
š Hospice is not the end of hope. It is hope for something different ā for peace, for presence, for meaningful time together.
Does hospice hasten or speed up death?
No. Hospice care does not hasten or postpone death in any way. Our role is to make the natural dying process as comfortable and peaceful as possible ā not to alter its course.
Medications used in hospice are carefully managed to relieve pain and distress, not to shorten life. The goal is always the highest possible quality of life for however long that life continues.
Is hospice only for people with cancer?
No. Hospice is available for any terminal illness. Common conditions we care for include advanced heart disease, COPD, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, end-stage kidney or liver disease, ALS, Parkinson's disease, stroke, and many others.
If your loved one has a serious illness that is no longer responding to curative treatment, they may qualify ā regardless of diagnosis.
Is hospice only for the elderly?
No. Hospice care is available to people of any age who meet the eligibility criteria. From children to adults to the elderly ā anyone facing a terminal illness with a prognosis of six months or less may be eligible.
Care guidelines for patients under 18 may differ slightly and often allow for concurrent curative and comfort care. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
